How to Close an Advertising Deal


Once an advertising sales pitch has been made, closing the deal and securing payment become the salesperson’s final objectives. Successfully making this move involves knowing and addressing any remaining concerns or objections, clarifying the final terms of the agreement and getting a signature on the dotted line.



Meet with the client during a time when neither of you will be rushed or pressured. Don’t try to squeeze in a closing appointment when one of you is watching the clock and trying to prepare for another meeting.



Reiterate the main benefits of your proposal that interested the client in the initial advertising sales presentation meeting. Remind the client about the cost-benefit analysis of the advertising proposal and work in specific information you may have gathered in previous meetings or conversations. For example, if a client is interested in reaching a particular market in an effort to stay ahead of his competition, remind him of that fact in your closing.


Use positive language and statements to bring a sense of excitement and high expectations to the close, but resist the urge to fill every silent pause with conversation.


Ask if there is anything else you can clarify for the client before finalizing the sale. This signals the client that the discussion is winding to a close and final negotiations are under way. Address any questions or concerns in a positive and confident manner.


Offer additional concessions if there is hesitation on the client’s part. If money is a concern, suggest a payment plan; if the effectiveness of a proposed campaign is in question, reiterate reassuring statistics; if there is general reluctance to close the deal, ask what you can do to finalize negotiations on the spot.


Complete contractual paperwork on the spot and ask for a check or credit card number to finish the deal.
